Beloved Blog 3 (relating favorite characters to todays society)

I sense this strong connection between Paul D and Sethe in todays society of young black men and women, of course it isn't as severe as their situation with being a slave and being completely lost mentally, and psychologically: but the fact that Paul D had a hard time figuring out how to love, express emotion, and didn't exactly know what it was to be a man reflects todays society. Nowadays that mentality is not only lost but it is embraced by some, particularly in the black community. I personally know alot of people who are grown, but don't know what it is to be a man either because they didn't have that leading example or they just don't care its more socially excepted to say "fuck that bitch" than "i love that woman" without being chastised. ironically those are the same things slaveholders would say to our women. To be a man or a woman now is to be of a certain age, at least thats what i see from the young adults i know and be around. Its not a matter of responsibility, or handling business when need be; certain items and experiences make you a man now. Paul D's mental state was crazy to me. I found it hard to believe that he honestly felt you had to be careful of loving so much it was like his heart was sectioned off and certain things went into a slot for the time being and some had a lifetime slot, but never had all of his heart. as i began to read more i realized it was a coping mechanism; at any given time all he had could be taken from him which i'm sure he had experienced on numerous occasions so in a sense to think that way back in slavery days was away to preserve your existence, if thats what you wanted.
